Reforming Legal Education in a Changing World

The Department of Law at NUI Maynooth is hosting a Young Scholars’ Symposium in June 2011. The symposium is open to scholars currently engaged in postgraduate study, as well as those who have been awarded doctorates in the last five years.

This inaugural symposium’s theme is focussed on re-examining how we teach the law, and indeed, challenging many of the dogmas that have developed and taken root in legal education. Law, like the societies it regulates, is a dynamic and ever-changing area of intellectual inquiry. Anecdotal evidence indicates that legal education has not kept pace with the changes in the modern legal landscape.

We solicit papers which deal with this theme. We also propose to host some panels with papers of general interest. Accordingly, we also invite research papers on any area of law. All accepted submissions will be grouped into broad subject areas for roundtable discussion.

The event will take place on the historic NUI Maynooth campus located a short distance from Dublin city. There is affordable on-campus accommodation available for delegates, as well as more luxurious options with two hotels in the locality.

Submissions

An abstract of the proposed paper (no more than 500 words) should be emailed to Dr. Neil Maddox (neil.maddox@nuim.ie) by 1^st May 2011. All proposals will be reviewed and responded to within two weeks.

The ISCL Annual Conference will take place on 29-30 April 2011 in University College Dublin School of Law. The Society invites proposals which place Irish law (in either part of Ireland) in comparative perspective, but any topic in comparative law or legal systems may be proposed: private or public law, criminal law and criminal justice, legal education, legal history, etc.

The closing date for submission of abstracts is 21 February 2011.Abstracts should be submitted to Dr. Marie-Luce Paris at marieluce.paris@ucd.ie.

NOTICE: Lectureship in Comparative Law (Trinity College Dublin)

A Lectureship in Comparative Law (three year contract) is being advertised for the School of Law at Trinity College Dublin (the University of Dublin). The deadline for applications is noon on 10 January 2011. The following information is taken from the official job description:

The School of Law welcomes applications from legal scholars for the appointment of Lecturer in Comparative Law. The successful candidate will be required to contribute to the lecturing programme of the School and in particular to the development of the new LL.M. programme in International and Comparative Law. The successful candidate will also be required to undertake undergraduate and postgraduate supervision, and will also be expected to engage in research and to be active in seeking research funding. In addition, the appointee will be required to carry out administrative duties as requested to do so by the Head of School.

The School seeks to make this appointment in order to develop a new specialist LL.M. programme in International and Comparative Law, commencing from September 2011.

The successful candidate will be required to provide lectures to students on the LL.M. programme in International and Comparative Law, and to assist in the development of that programme together with the Director of the LL.M. programmes at the Law School. S/he may also be required to provide lectures to freshman and sophister students together with carrying out the assessment of students through coursework and annual examination, as directed by the Head of School in the Law School. The successful candidate will be expected to advance legal knowledge through publications, participation in conferences etc and will be required to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students. S/he will also be expected to do such administrative work as shall be directed by the Head of School in the Law School. S/he will be expected to engage in research work both on an individual and collaborative basis and to be active in seeking research funding for same.

The ideal candidate will have an excellent academic record and proven teaching experience. S/he must have a PhD or be close to the completion of a PhD.

The appointee will have a strong interest in academic law, preferably in the area of Comparative Law or related fields, and should have a proven track record in both teaching and research. They must be prepared to carry out their duties on a full-time basis.
